An Australian employer can sponsor an international worker to work for their company in Australia under the Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482), also known as the “TSS visa.”

Employer Nomination Scheme Overview
- Work for no more than two or four years if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) is in issue. Holders of Hong Kong passports may stay for up to 5 years.
- As long as the visa is in effect, you may make as many trips to and from Australia as you want.
- Apply for permanent residency if you are qualified.
- The Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream of the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) is open to holders of eligible 457 and TSS - short-term stream visas.
- Be nominated to work in an occupation on the list of eligible short-term skilled occupations
- Have an occupation on the defined skilled occupation list
- Have relevant skills assessment for the occupation
- Possess at least 2 years of relevant work experience in your nomination occupation or in a related occupation.
- Unless you are excluded from doing so, you must demonstrate that you at least fulfil the minimal requirements for English language competency.
If an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies, you can stay for up to 2 years or up to 4 years. Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.

Temporary Skill Shortage visa (TSS)
You may qualify for the TSS visa if you have the abilities to fill a position with an Australian firm who is looking to hire you.
The TSS visa is divided into three (3) streams:
- The Short-Term stream
- The Medium-Term stream
- The Labour Agreement stream
The Consolidated Skilled Occupations list can be used to choose the stream that applies to you. Your TSS visa will only be issued for a maximum of two (2) years if your occupation qualifies you for the short-term stream. Your TSS visa will only be granted for a maximum of four (4) years if your occupation qualifies you for the medium-term stream.
The Temporary Skill Shortage visa streams
This stream is accessible if your business wants to sponsor you (as an overseas skilled worker) for a TSS visa on a short basis solely in professions specified on the Short-term Skilled Occupation list (STSOL) – see lists of eligible skilled professions. With this visa, you can fill jobs for a maximum of:

This stream is available if your employer wants to sponsor you (as an overseas skilled worker) for a TSS visa for periods of up to four years in occupations listed on the Regional Occupation List (ROL) or the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
This stream is accessible if your employer has a labour agreement with the Department and wants to sponsor you (as an international worker).
General Eligibility (All Streams)
As an overseas worker, you could be able to obtain this visa if you:
- Have been submitted for a post by a sponsor who has received approval, see Sponsor who has received approval
- Fulfil the necessary standards for qualifications and skills, including completing any necessary examinations.
- Meet the language requirements in English
- Have a substantive visa, a subclass 010 (Bridging A), a subclass 020 (Bridging B), or a subclass 030 (Bridging C) visa if they are already in Australia.
- Have largely complied with all requirements that apply or were applicable to your previous visa
- Fulfil the requirements for character and health
- Meet the requirements for the stream you are applying to
Temporary Skill Shortage visa application process
The TSS visa is meant for skilled workers who want to work in Australia temporarily. Here is an overview of the procedure.
Step 1: Verify if your occupation is on the Consolidated Skilled Occupation Lists
Step 2: Make sure you meet all the eligibility requirements
You must meet the following requirements to apply:
- Good English language knowledge
- Have a valid health insurance during your stay in Australia; and
- Meet the health and character requirements
Step 3: Find a job with an Australian employer willing and ready to sponsor you
Step 4: Get nomination by employer, your future employer will have to nominate you for the TSS visa.
When your employer submits their applications to sponsor and nominate you, you can submit an application for a visa at the same time.
Step 5: Apply for the TSS 482 Visa

Step 7: Visa collection! Once your visa is out, you are ready to start working.

Australia considers each application individually, and actual processing timeframes may vary due to unique situations like:

As long as the visa is in effect, you are permitted to leave and enter Australia as frequently as you like. The length of your stay outside of Australia will not prolong your visa.
If an International Trade Obligation (ITO) is in effect, you may stay for a maximum of 4 years rather than just 2 years. Holders of Hong Kong passports are permitted to stay for a maximum of five years.
Employers who sponsor foreign nationals for the TSS visa to work in Australia must:
- Be a legitimately active business
- Have no negative information about the company
- Choose a genuine, full-time job for the foreign worker to be nominated for.
- Satisfy the standards relating to pay and job conditions.
- If necessary, provide documentation of the labour market testing
