Visitor visa subclass 600 Overview
- Visit your friends and family in Australia.
- Enter Australia for tourism, a cruise or any other reason other than business or medical treatments.
- This visa allows you to attend school or training for up to three months.
- However, a student visa may be more appropriate if your main purpose for visiting Australia is to further your education.
The visitor subclass 600 is for a short stay.
The length of your stay is indicated on the visa approval letter. The duration of your visa is decided on a case-by-case basis. Australia considers the following points before deciding the length of your stay;
- Your desired length of stay
- Your reason for visiting Australia
You should note that Australia may not grant you your desired length of stay and decides if your visa is multiple or a single entry. If granted a multiple-entry visa, you can leave and return to Australia as long as the visa is still valid.

- You must intend to stay in Australia for a short period and adhere to conditions attached to your visa
- For the best interest of the child or any applicant below 18 years
Entering Australia while on a cruise requires a valid visa.
Any time spent on a cruise that returns to Australia counts as part of your total time spent in the country. To Australia, you still haven’t left the country. A visa’s validity cannot be reset due to a round-trip voyage.
You may be eligible for a visa with a validity of more than 12 months if you are the parent or step-parent of an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
Each individual application is reviewed by Australia.
Assuming you are granted a visa for longer than 12 months, you may be permitted to re-enter Australia many times during that time of validity. In no event may your total time in Australia in any 18-month period exceed 12 months. In addition, you should have your health insurance situation sorted properly.
This visa cannot be extended to allow for additional stay in Australia. In Australia, you’ll need to apply for a new visa.
If your existing visa does not contain a condition that prevents you from staying for an extended period of time, such as condition 8503 – No Further Stay, you are eligible to apply for a new visa. In exceptional cases, we may agree to lift the restriction on additional stays. You’ll need a special visa to stay in Australia for an extended period of time or permanently.
You are not allowed to include any relatives on the application.
A separate application is required for each member of your immediate family, even if they are included on your passport.
You must be outside of Australia both when you submit your application and when Australia makes a decision on your application for this visa.

The number of entries you have is indicated in VEVO and your visa document.
If your visa allows for more than one entrance, you’ll be able to leave Australia and come back many times while it’s still valid.
If you leave Australia on a single-entry visa, you won’t be able to go back without applying for a new visa.

Valid passport
Your visa application will be denied without a valid passport or other acceptable travel document. If you do not have a valid passport, make sure to have one before you apply.

Once you have a visitor visa, you cannot renew it or change its status to one of another kind, such a working visa. You must apply for a new visa if you want to change or renew it.
